Monuments
Valencia is a big cultural city. It’s a city where different religions and cultures mix and live together. Here you can observe different types of art, as the Roman, the Christian and Muslim, all together in the same place. This city is rich in museums which are worth of a visit.
Cathedrals and churches
You can admire the Virgen de los Desamparados, constituted by the Cathedral, the Miguelete Tower, the Basilica of the Virgin, and the Palace of Valencian gouvernement (Palau de la Generalitat). This complex is dedicated to the patron of the city. During the Fallas Festival, which is internationally famous, devoted people, traditionally disguised, offer flowers to the Virgin of Valencia.
The Virgen de los desamparados
This a 17thcentury religious monument, built by Diego Martínez Ponce de Urrana, and it is situated in the historical city centre of Valencia, next to the Cathedral. It’s characterized by its special offset structure. The virgin who gives the name to the monument is the patron of the city and she is celebrated with flowers during the Fallas festival. The inside is quite rounded and it includes a very interesting crypt. Outside you can admire a very nice square, the square of the Virgin, with its terraces and its famous fountain, which represents the river Turia and its affluents. Behind the basilica, an archeological site permits to know better the habits and the nature of the Valencian culture.
Miguelete Tower
Symbol of the Gothic architecture of Valencia, this tower emerged above all the complex and it can be seen from every point of the ancient quarter.
At the beginning, the Cathedral had a bell tower incorporated in the architectonic complex. This bell tower was destructed and a 14th chapter house was built in the same place.
Palau de la Generalitat
The Palau de la Generalitat is situated in the centre of Valencia, at the end of Caballeros street, at the corner with the square of the Virgin and Manines square (which was called San Bartolomeo square), and near the Cathedral. It is an architectural building characterized by a mix of artistic styles, from the Gothic to the Renaissance.
A little bit of history: in 1418 the members of Parliament decided to find a new place where to have their periodic meetings, so in 1421 they rent by Jaume Desplà two rooms of a house “alberch”, now situated in Caballeros street.
